
To enter a song for consideration as Virginia's new official State song, contestants were required to submit:
- A completed and signed Entry Form. The form can be viewed and printed using the free Adobe Reader, available at http://www.adobe.com.
- An audio cassette with a label that included the name of the song and the songwriter's name.
- A lyric sheet typed or printed legibly.
Completed entries must have been postmarked no later than August 31, 1998.

- A song or songs chosen in the State Song Competition will not automatically become the new State Song of Virginia. The selected song will be recommended to the Legislature and the Governor who will then decide if the song will become the new State Song.
- The writer or writers whose song is chosen as the official state song may be asked to relinquish all rights to the song as a gift to the Commonwealth of Virginia.
